The Roman colony was founded in 36 b.c. by a contingent of legionnaires from Caesar's army, on the oppidum gallo of Bessara. Unfortunately the large ancient monuments like the triumphal arch, the forum and the theatre are no longer in existence, or have been incorporated into modern buildings.
