The full Roman name is Colonia Iulia Paterna Claudia Narbo Martius. 
It was the first colonial town founded by the Romans in Gallia Transalpina, on the banks of the river Atax (Aude. Under the reign of Augustus (27 a.C. - 14 d.C.) it had a period of great prosperity, favoured by its geographic position.
